.86A^(222) to .84B^210 . Determine how m...

`._86A^(222) to ._84B^210` . Determine how many `alpha`-particles and `beta`-particles have been emitted in the above reaction.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The reduction in mass number =222-210=12
This reduction in mass number can only be caused due to emission of `alpha`-particles . Now since the mass of an `alpha`-particles is 4, so the number of `alpha`-particles emitted `=12/4=3`
Again, due to the emission of 3 `alpha`-particles the decrease in atomic number = 2 x 3 =6
In the reaction the decrease in atomic number = 86-84=2
`therefore` Due to emission of `beta`-particles increase in atomic number
=6-2 =4
Since due to emission of 1 `beta`-particle atomic number increases by 1, so the number of `beta` - particles emitted =`4/1`=4
