Out of `CHCl_(3), CH_(4) and SF_(4)` the molecules do not having regular geometry are:

A

`CHCl_(3)` only

B

`CHCl_(3) " and " SF_(4)`

C

` CH_(4)` only

D

` CH_(4) " and " SF_(4)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
c

Due to absence of lone paires of electrons on carbon ,
`CH_(4) ` has regular tetrahedral geometry . Although
` CHCl_(3)` also does not have lone pairs of electrons on
carbon but due to presenece of three polar C-Cl
bonds , and one almost non-polar C - H bond, its
geometry is little distorted from the regular shape .
In constrast , ` SF_(4)` has one lone pair and four bond
pairs , therefore , it does not have a regular geometry .Thus , option (C) is correct .
