The maximum number of possible interference maxima for slit-separation equal to twice the wavelength in Young's double-slit experiment is

A

Infinite

B

Five

C

Three

D

Zero

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

For maxima path difference`=dsintheta=nlamda`
if `d=2lamda` then `2lamdasin theta=n lamda" "therefore sintheta=(n)/(2)`
But maximum value of `sintheta=(1)/(2)" "1=n/2 or n=2`
`therefore` The maxima are obtained for `n=2,+-1 and +-2`
sides of the central maximum.
`therfore ` Only 5 maxima corresponding to 0,+1,-1,+2 and -2 are obtained.
