In a double slit experiment, the two slits are 1 mm apart and the screen is placed 1 m away. A monochromatic lightg of wavelength 500 nm is used, what will be the width of each slit for obtaining ten maxima of double slit within the central maxima of single slit pattern ?

A

0.1 mm

B

0.5 mm

C

0.02 mm

D

0.2 mm

The correct Answer is:
D

Angular width of the central maximum in a double slit experiment is `X/D=(lamdaD)/(d//D)=(lamda)/(d)` and the angular width of the central maximum in a single slit diffraction pattern is `(2lamda)/(a)` where 'a' is the width of the slit.
it is given that `(2lamda)/(a)=(10lamda)/(d)`.
`therefore a=(2lamdad)/(10lamda)=.2d=0.2xx1=0.2mm`
