Consider the following sets of quantum n...

Consider the following sets of quantum numbers.
(i) `{:(n,l,m,s,),(3,0,0,+1//2,):}`
(ii) `{:(n,l,m,s,),(2,2,1,+1//2,):}`
(iii) `{:(n,l,m,s,),(4,3,-2,-1//2,):}`
(iv) `{:(n,l,m,s,),(1,0,-1,-1//2,):}`
(v) `{:(n,l,m,s,),(3,2,3,+1//2,):}`
Which of the following sets of quantum number is not possible ?

A

`(i)`and`(iii)`

B

`(ii),`(iii)`,and`(iv)`

C

`(i),(ii),(iii)`,and`(iv)`

D

`(ii),(iv)`,and`(v)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

`(ii)` is not possible because `l` can never be equal to n as is takes value from `0` to `n - 1, (iv)` and (v) are not possible because for nay give value of `l, m_(l)` can take value form `-l` to `+l` including zero. Thus, if `l = 0`, then `m_(l) = 0`. similarly, if `l = 2`, then `m_(l) = 0, +-1`, and `+-2`.
