`A` abd `B` are ideal gases. The molecular weights of `A` and `B` are if the ratio of ` 1 : 4`. The pressure of a gas mixture containing equal weights of `A` and B is `p` atmospheres. What is the partial pressure (in atm) of `B` in the mixture ?

A

`p//5`

B

`p//2`

C

`p//2.5`

D

`3p//4`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
A

According to Dalton's law of partial pressures,
`p_(B) = chi_(B)p`
`chi_(B) = (n_(B))/(n_(A) + n_(B)) = (m_(B)//M_(B))/(m_(A)//M_(A) + m_(B)//M_(B))`
Since `m_(A) = m_(B) = m` and `M_(B) = 4 M_(A)` , we have
`chi_(B) = ((m)/(4M_(A)))/((m)/(M_(A)) + (m)/(4M_(A))) = ((m)/(M_(A))((1)/(4)))/((m)/(M_(A))(1 + (1)/(4)))`
`= (1//4)/(5//4) = (1)/(5)`
`:. p_(B) = ((1)/(5))p`
