Which fo the following statements are correct concerning redox propreties ?
(i) The reducing power of hydrogen halides increases from hydrogen chloride to hydrogen iodide.
(ii) The oxidizing power of halogens decreases from chlorine to iodine.
A metal M for which `E^(Ɵ)` for the half-reaction
`M^(n+) +n e^(-) hArr M`
is very negative will be a good reducing agent.

A

(i) ,(ii) ,(ii)

B

The correct Answer is:
A

Order of reducing power :
` HCI lt HBr lt HI`
This happens because of the decrease in the (H-X) bond strength.
Order of oxdizing power :
` CI_2 gt Br_2 gt I_2`
This happens because fo the decrease in the value fo reduction potential .
If `E_(M^(n+)//M)^Ө` is `-ve` , it implies that the process of reduction is nonspontaneous while the process of oxidation is spontaneous.

Which of the following statements are correct concerning redox properties? (i) A metal M for which E^(@) for the half cell reaction M^(n+)+"ne"^(-)hArrM is very negative will be a good reducing agent. (ii) The oxidizing power of the halogen decreases from chlorine to iodine. (iii) The reducing power of hydrogen halides increases from hydrogen chloride to hydrogen iodide.

Consider the following statements, I. Among halide ions, iodine is the most powerful reducing agent. II. HOCl is stronger acid than HOBr. III. HF is stronger acid than HCl. IV. Fluorine is the only halogen that does not show variable oxidation states. The correct set of statements is

The oxides of Cl, Br and I are well known. They have various composition. The oxides are thermally unstable and dangerously explosive. They react with alkali. The bromine oxides are thermally more stable than chlorine oxides. The structure of halogen oxides is explained on the basis of VSEPR theory. The hydrides of chlorine, bromine and iodine can be made by direct synthesis an they are well strongly fuming become increasingly more powerful reducing agents. Halogens also form oxoacids of the form HOX,HXO_(2) ,HXO_(3) " and " HXO_(4) The acidic character of oxoacids and halogen oxides decreases from 'Cl' to 'I', however it increases with increase in oxidation number of halogen in them.
