`C` and `H` atoms of the alkane molecule are held together entirely by covalent bonds. These bonds either join two `C` atoms and hence, are nonpolar, or join `C` and `H` atoms that differ very little in electonegativity `(2.5 "for" C and 2.1 "for" H)` and hence, are only slightly polar. Furthermore, these bonds are directed in a very symmetrical way ( tetrahedral orientation) so that the slight bonds polarities tend to cancel out. As a result, an alkane molecule is either nonopolar or very weakly polar.
