However, when a mixture of an alkane and fuming `HNO_(3)` vapors is heated at `423-673K` under pressure (vapor phase nitrogen), alkanes undergo nitration giving a mixture of nitroalkanes resulting through the substitution of different types of `H` atoms as well as the cleavage of `C-C` bonds.
