The anti-conformation of `n`-butane is more stable than its fully eclipsed conformation by about

A

`16 KJmol^(-1)`

B

`25.49KJ mol^(-1)`

C

`13KJ mol^(-1)`

D

`19KJmol^(-1)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Fully eclipsed conformation of `n`-butane has the highest energy of all conformations on account of maximum torsional strain between electron clouds on adjacent `C` atoms and maximum van der Waals strain ( or steric strain) between two methyl group on adjacent `C` atoms. However, anti-conformation is more stable than partially eclipsed conformation by about `16 KJ mol^(-1)`.
