Colour in transition metal compounds very commonly arises from d-d electronic transition. It can also ion by + ve ion and form charge transfer spectra. For Group 5 transition metals, the `(+5)` state has a `d^(0)` configuration and so colourless compounds would be expected. `NbF_(5)`, `TaCI_(5)` are white, but `V_(2)O_(5)` is red or orange, `NCI_(5)` is yellow, `NbBr_(5)` is orange and `NbI_(3)` is brass coloured. The colours airse because of change transfer.
