`CrO_(3)` on treatment with NaOH solution produces

A

`Cr_(2)O_(3)`

B

`Na_(2)Cr_(2)O_(7)`

C

`Na_(2)CrO_(4)`

D

`Cr(OH)_(3)`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

Chromium trioxide, `CrO_(3)` , a bright orange solid, is commonly called 'chromic acid'. It is usually prepared by adding concentration `H_(2)SO_(4)` to a saturated solution of sodium dichromate
`Na_(2)Cr_(2)O_(7) + H_(2)SO_(4) rarr 2CrO_(3) + Na_(2)SO_(4) + H_(2)O`
The colour arises form charge transfer (not d-d spectra as `Cr(+6)` has `d^(0)` configuration). `CrO_(3)` is toxic, and corrosive. The crystal structure consists of chains of used tetrahedra. `CrO_(3)` dissolves readily in water, and is both a very strong acid and an oxidizing agent. It is an acidic oxied, and dissolves in NaOH solution, forming the chromate ion `CrO_(4)^(2-)`.
`CrO_(3) + NaOH rarr Na_(2)CrO_(4)`
