Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
D

Group 5 consists of elements- V, Nb, Ta and Db. In many ways, these elements are similar to the elements of Group 4. They are shiny silver coloured metals with high melting points. Keeping with the trend, they are slightly less positive than their predeccessor. Although each of these elements shows all the formal oxidation states form `(+5)` down to `(-1)`, the most stable one in case of V is `+4`. By contrast, the chemistry of Nb and Ta is confined to the group oxidation state of `+5`. Element V readily exists in four different oxidation states: `+5, +4, +3`, and `+2`, corresponding to the `d^(0)` , `d^(1)` , `d^(2)` , and `d^(3)` electron configurations. The chief ue of V is to increase the strength and toughness of steel.
