Which of the following compexes can't exhibit geometric isomerism ?

A

Tetrahedral complexes

B

Square planar complexes

C

Both (1) and (2)

D

Octachedral comlexes

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

In geometric isomers of coordination compounds the same ligands are arranged in different orders within the coordination sphere. Geometric isomerism occurs when atoms or groups of atoms can be arranged on two sides of a rigid structure. C is means ''adjacent to'' (`90^(@)` separation) and trans means ''on the opposite side of''. Cis -trans isomerism is not possible for tetrahedral complexes in which all angles are (ideally) `109.5^(@)` . This isomerism is also not possible for complexes with CN 2 and 3 as all the positions are equivalent.
