Total number of geometric isomers possible for an octahedral molecules, two `CI^(-)` ions and one `NO_(2)^(-)` ion is

A

3

B

6

C

9

D

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Three structure isomers are possible `[CoC1_(2)(en)]` `NO_(2),[CoC1(en)_(2)NO_(2)]C1, [CoC1(en)_(2)ONO]` . Two geometric isomers are possible for each of these. Consider the first complex in which two of the C1 ligands can be either cis (`90^(@)` separation) or trans (`180^(@)` separation). Same is true for C1 and `NO_(2)` in the second cemplex and C1 and ONO in the third complex.
