Nicol prism used to convert ordinary light into plane polarized light consists of

A

`MgCO_(3)`

B

`Na_(2)CO_(3)`

C

`K_(2)CO_(3)`

D

`CaCO_(3)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Nicol prism (named ofter William Nicol) is an optical decive, constructed from two crystal of calcite `(CaCO_(3))`stuck together with canada balsam (a yellowish liquid derived from fir trees, with a refractive index similar of that of glass. Used for mounting microscopic slides and as an adhesive for optical instruments), used for obtaining plane polarized light. The extraodinary ray passes through the device but the ordinary ray is totally reflected at the interface between the two crystals.
