A wooden block is floating in a water tank. The block is pressed to its bottom. During this process, work done is equal to :

A

work done against upthrust exerted by the water

B

Work done against upthrust plus loss of gravitational potential energy of the block

C

Work done against upthrust minus loss of ravitational potential energy of the block

D

all the above

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

Initially the wooden block floats with partially immersed in water. Initiall upthrust exerted by water is equal to weight of the block. But when it is pressed down more water is displaced. Hence upthrust exerted by water increases. The force requried to press down the block is equal to `F="upthrust"-mg` Hence, work done by the force F will be equal to work done against (upthrust -mg). It means, work done by external force is equal to work done against upthrust loss of gravitational potential energy of the block.

A wooden block of cross sectional area A (in shape of a rectangle) has height h. It is held such that its lower surface touches the water surface in a wide and deep tank. The block is released in this positon. It oscillates for some time and then settles into its equilibrium positon. in equilibrium the block floats with its upper face just on the water surface. Calculate the amount of heat generated in the process assuming that the loss in gravitational potential energy of the system coprising of water and the block gets converted into heat. Density of water is rho .

A wooden block floating in a bucket of water has 4/5 of its volume submerged. When certain amount of an oil is poured into the bucket, it is found that the block is just under the oil surface with half of its volume under water and half in oil. The density of oil relative to that of water is:

A block of wood is floating on the surface of water in a beaker. The beaker is covered with a bell jar and the air is evacuated. What will happen to the block ?

Statement -1 : A block of wood is floating in a tank containing water. The apparent weight of the floating block is equal to zero. Statement -2 : Because the entire weight of the block is supported by the buoyant force (the upward thrust) due to water.

A cylindrical block of wood of mass M is floating n water with its axis vertica. It is depressed a little and then released. Show that the motion of the block is simple harmonic and find its frequency.

A wooden block is on the bottom of a tank when water is poured in. The contact between the block and the tank is so good that no water gets between them. Is there a buoyant force on the block?
