Among the following which one has weakest carbon-halogen bond?

A

Benzyl bromide

B

Bromobenzene

C

Vinyl bromide

D

Benzyl chloride

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

`C-X` bond in benzyl bromide is much weaker than in vinyl bromide is much weaker than in vinyl bromide and bromobenzene since the benzyl cation left after the removal of the bromide ion is stabilised by resonance. Further, `C-Br` is weaker than `C-Cl` bond because Br is larger in size than Cl, hence `C-Br` bond length is weaker. Therefore, `C_(6)H_(5)CH_(2)Br` has the weakest `C-X` bond.
