A solid of density `sigma` floats in a liquid of density `rho`. What will happen to level of liquid if solid melts ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

For floatation `Mg = rho V_0 g`
`V_0 = (M)/(rho)`
`V_0` : volume of displaced liquid
When the solid melts, the volume occupied by it `V = (M)/(sigma)`
If `(M)/(sigma) gt (M)/(rho), i.e., V gt V_0` level of liquid will rise
`(M)/(sigma) gt (M)/(rho), i.e., V gt V_0`, level of liquid will fall
No change in level of liquid if `sigma = rho`.
