The solid curve shows the continous decrease in `[R]` as the reaction proceeds. The slopes of the dashed lines show the average rates for the time points they conncect. The slope of a sadhed line is `-Delta[R]//Deltat` . The instantaneous rate at any time is the slope of the tangent (solid line) to the curve at the point correspoding to that time.
At the intervals are shortened, the slope of the dashed lines come closer to the tangent to the curve.
