Which of the noble gases is the least polarized?

A

`Rn`

B

`Xe`

C

`Kr`

D

`He`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
4

Noble gases being monatomic have no interatomic forces except weak dispsersion forces and therefore they are liquified at very low temperature Consequently they are low boiling points. The strength of dispersion forces is directly releated to the polarizability of the noble gas, which in turn is directly related to the size of the atom. Helium, being smallest, is the least polarizable, hence He has the lowest boiling point `(4.2 K)` of any known substance.
