Following the observation that oxygen reacted with the powerful oxidising agent platinum hexafluoride to give the ionic compound dioxygenyl hexafluoroplatinate, `O_(2)^(+)PtF_(6)^(-)`, it was reasoned that `Xe` might react in a similar manner, since the first ionization enthalpies of molecular oxygen and xenon are almost identical. In `1962` this predication was verified when it was found that `Xe` and `PtF_(6)` react together at room temperature to give red colour compound.
However, the compound did not have the simplistic formula, `Xe^(+)PtF_(6)^(-)` and it is now believed to have been a mixture of compounds that contained `XeF^(+)` the ion, one such possibility is `[XeF]^(+)[Pt_(2)F_(11)]^(-)`
