For electric power transmission, copper ...

For electric power transmission, copper or aluminium wire is used.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i.) Copper and aluminium contain large number of free electrons.
(ii.) These free electrons can move throughout conductor easily.
(iii.) This results into copper and aluminium having low values of resistivity.
(iv.) Thus, copper and aluminium are good conductors of electricity and offer low resistance to the flow of current.
Hence, aluminium and copper are used for electric power transmission.

A copper wire of diameter 0.16 cm is connected in series to an aluminium wire of diameter 0.25 cm. A current of 10 A is passed through them. Find (i) current density in the copper wire (ii) drift velocity of free electrons in the aluminium wire. The number of free electrons per unit volume of aluminium wire is 10^(29) m^(-3) .

Suppose uniusulated copper or aluminium wires are used for flow of electricity from pole to pole in the street. Do you expect a better flow in summer or winter and why?

A: Electrical power through transmission lines is transmitted at high voltage. R: At high voltage theft of power is checked.

Optical fibers are the best medium of transmission over copper wires, because
