Why is the conversion of ethanol to ethanoic acid an oxidation reaction?

In the transformation of ethanol `(CH_(3)CH_(2)OH)` to ethanoic acid `(CH_(3)COOH)`, one oxygen atom is added to ethanol. The reaction in which oxygen is added to a substance is called oxidation reaction. Hence, the transformation of ethanol into ethanoic acid is an oxidation reaction.
