Which of the following pairs can be distinguished by sodium hypoiodite?

A

`CH_(3)CHO` and `CH_(3)COCH_(3)`

B

`CH_(3)CH_(2)CHO` and `CH_(3)COCH_(3)`

C

`CH_(3)CH_(2)OH` and `CH_(3)CH_(2)CHOHCH_(3)`

D

`CH_(3)OH` and `CH_(3)CH_(2)CHO`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Aldehydes and ketones having at least one methyl group linked to carbonyl carbon atom gives this test. So, here in option (b) ketone is having `(CH_(3)CO-)` group and the other is having `(CH_(3)CH_(2)overset(O)overset(||)(C )-)` group which do not give hypoiodite test. So thus they can be distinguished.
