Adsorption of a gas on the surface of solid is sgenerally accompanied by decrease in entropy but still it is spontaneous in naturre. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Adsorption is an exothermic process, i.e., energy factor favfours the process. As `DeltaG=DeltaH-Delta S,` in adsorption, though `DeltaS` is -ve but `DeltaH` is also-ve and `DeltaH gt T DeltaS` in magnitude so that `DeltaG` is ve. Hence, the process is spontaneous.
