Why is adsorption always exothermic ?...

Why is adsorption always exothermic ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When a gas is adsorbed on the surface of a solid its entropy decreases, i.e., `DeltaS` is -ve. Now, `DeltaG=DeltaH-T DeltaS` and for the process to be spontaneous, free energy change, `DeltaG,` must be negative. As `TDeltaS` is -ve, i.e., `-T Delta S` is +ve, therefore, `DeltaG` can be-ve only if `DeltaH` is-ve, Hence, adsorption is always exothermic.

Why adsorption is exothermic ?

Statement: A catalyst always lower the energy of ectivation. Explanation: The catalyst-reactant interaction forms activated adsorbed complex and adsorption is always exothermic.

The correct statements pertaining to the adsorption of a gas on a solid surface are (i) Adsorption is always exothermic (ii) Physisorption may transform into chemisorption at high temperature (iii) Physisorption increases with increasing temperature but chemisorotion decrease with increasing temperature (iv) Chemisorption is more exothermic than physisoption, however, it is very slow due to higher energy of activation
