What is the role of limstone in the extraction of iron from its oxides ?

Either limestone itself or CaO obtained by its thermal decomposition acts as a basic flux in the extraction of iron from its oxides. It removes acidic impurity of ` SiO_2 ` present in the oxide ore to form fusible calcium silicate slag.
