Explain how two complexes of nickel, `[Ni(CN)_4]^(2-)` and `Ni(CO)_4` have different structures but do not differ in magnetic behaviour.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In `[Ni(CN)_(4)]^(2-)`, Ni is in +2 state. Hybridisation is `dsp^(2)`. Structure is square planar. All electrons are paired. Hence, it is diamagnetic.
In `[Ni(CO)_(4)]`, Ni is in '0' state. Hybridisation is `sp^(3)`. Hence, structure is different (tetrahedral). All electrons are paired. Hence, it is also diamagnetic.
