In the following pairs of halogen coompounds, which compound undergoes faster `S_(N)1` reaction?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The reactvity in `S_(N)1` reaction reaction is governed by stability of the intermediate carbocation which an alkyl halide gives on ionization. Thus,

Since `3^(@)` carbocations are more stable than `2^(@)` carbocations, therefore will react faster than in `S_(N)1` reactions.

Since `2^(@)` carbocations are more stable than `1^(@)` carbocations, therefore, will react faster than in `S_(N)1` reaction.
