Which out of the two : 2-cyclopentenol or 3-cyclopentenol has chiral centre.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

2-Cyclopentenol has a chiral centre at `C_(1)` because it is attached to four different atoms/groups: `H,OH,CH_(2),CH=CH`.
In contrast, in 3-cyclopentenol, `C_(1)` is attached to H, OH and two identical `CH_(2)` groups, one on either side. therefore, the molecule is symmetrical (i.e., has a plane of symmetry) and hence is not chiral.
