Allylic bromination occurs through free radical intermediate. Out of the two possible allylic free radicals (Ia and Ib), free radical radical (1b) is stabilized by the equivalent resonance structures but free radical (Ia) is stabilized by two non-equivalent resonance structures. in other words, free radical (1b) is more stable and thus gives the allylic bromide (II) on treatment with `Br_(2)` which upon sebseuqent hydrolysis gives allylic alcohol (III).
