Why is an alkylamine more basic than ammonia ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to +I-effect of the alkyl group, the electron density on the N-atom of alkylamine `(RNH_(2))` increases as compared to that on the Natom of ammonia `(NH_(3))`. As a result, alkylamine can more easily donate a pair electrons than `NH_(3)` and hence alkylamine is more basic than `NH_(3)`.
