10g fairly concentrated solution of CuSO...

10g fairly concentrated solution of `CuSO_(4)` is electrolyzed using `0.01F` of electricity. Calculate:
(a) The weight of resulting solution
(b) Equivalents of acid or alkali in the solution.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
final weight `=9.6g, 0.01eq`. of acid

At cathode:
`2e^(-) +Cu^(+2) rarr Cu`
At anode:
`2H_(2)O rarr 4H^(+) +O_(2) +4e^(-)`
Eq. of `O_(2)` evolved = Eq. of Cu formed `= 0.01`
total loss in wt.
`=0.1 xx 8 +(0.01 xx 63.5)/(2) = 0.3975`
wt. of resulting solution `= 10 - 0.03975 = 9.6025g`
