Calculate the equilibrium concentration ...

Calculate the equilibrium concentration of all ions in an ideal solution prepared by mixing `25.00mL` of `0.100M TI^(+)` with `25.00 mL` of `0.200M Co^(3+)`
`E^(@) (TI^(+)//TI^(3+)) =- 1.25 V, E^(@) (Co^(3+)//Co^(2+)) = 1.84V`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
`TI^(+) =10^(-8), Co^(+3) = 2xx 10^(-8)`

moles of `TI^(+1)` initially `=0.0025`
moles of `Co^(+3)` initially `=0.005`
`{:(TI^(+1)+,2Co^(+3)rarr,2Co^(+2)+,TI^(+3)),(0.0025,0.005,0.005,0.0025):}`
since k value high almost all `TI^(+)` & `Co^(+3)` will convert into `TI^(+3) & Co^(+2)` respectively.
`E_(cell)^(@) = 1.84 - 1.25 = 0.59 =(0.0591)/(2) logk`
`k = 10^(20)`
`10^(10) = ((0.005)^(2)(0.0025))/(4x^(3))`
`x = 5.386 xx 10^(-10)` mole
total volume `=50 mL = 0.05L`
`[Co^(+3)] = (2xx 5.386 xx 10^(-10))/(0.05) = 2xx 10^(-8)`
`[TI^(+)] = 10^(-8)`
