A small spherical conductor 'A' of radias 'a' is initially charged to a potential 'V' and then placed inside an uncharged spherical conducting shell 'B' of radius `6a` as shown. The potential of the spherical conductor 'A' after closing the switch S is

A

V

B

`(V)/(3)`

C

`(V)/(2)`

D

`(V)/(6)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Let the initial charge on the spherical conductor A is Q
`therefore(kQ)/(a)=V`
`implieskQ=Va` ..(i)
When which S is closed, the total charge Q will appear on the outer surface of shell B.
`therefore` final potential of the spherical conductor A is
`V'=(kQ)/(6a)=(Va)/(6a)=(V)/(6)`
