One gram of a metallic chloride was found to contain 0.835 g of chlorine. Its vapour density is 85.5.If its moleculars formula is `M_(x)``Cl_(y)`,then what is value of (x+y) ?

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
5

`M(x)Cl_(y) = MCl_(y)` (valency of `Cl = 1`)
Molar mass of `M_(x)Cl_(y) = 85.5 xx 2 = 171 g//mol`
`("Mass of chlorine")/("Mass of metalic chlorine") = (0.835)/(1) = (35.5 y)/(171)`
On solving `y = 4`
