If a leap is selected at random, then what is the probability that it will have 53 Fridays?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A leap year consists of 52 weeks and 2 days. These two days can be {(Sunday, Monday), (Monday, Tuesday), (Tuesday, Wednesday), (Wednesday, Thursday), (Thursday, Friday), (Friday, Saturday), (Saturday, Sunday)}. Total number of elementary events = 7
Now, in order that year selected at random should contain 53 Friday, one of the left 2 days must br Friday. This can happen in any one of the two ways.
(Thursday, Friday) or (Friday, Saturday) `therefore` Number of favourable events = 2
Thus, required probability = `(2)/(7)`
