What are the possible paths of free electrons inside the conductor ?

Text Solution

In the absence of electric field inside conductor, free electrons are unacceleated , so their path between consecutive collisions is straight line.
In the presence of electric field inside conductor, free electrons are accelerated so their path is generally curved.

What do you mean by thermal motion of free electrons in conductors ?

Assertion : Inside a conductor, electrons have no motion in the absence of some potential difference across it. Reason : In the absence of potential difference no electrostatic force will act on the electrons inside the conductor.
