Unlike glucose, neither `alpha` nor `beta`-methyl glucoside reduces Tollens' reagent or Fehling solution. Why?

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
Glucose is reducing in nature due to the presnece of open chain aldehydic form in equilibrium with cyclic isomers.
Glycoside Cyclic acetal formed by reaction between glucose & `CH_(3)OH`. It exists in two anomeric forms (`alpha` & `beta`). These are stable towards bases & are not hydrolyzed in fehling or Tollen's reagent.

Give the reaction of glucose with Tollen's reagent and Fehling's solution.

An organic compound (A) with molecular formula C_8H_8 O forms an orange red precipitate with 2,4 -DNP reagent and gives yellow precipitate on heating with iodine in the presence of sodium hydroxide . It neither reduces Tollen's reagent or Fehling's solution , nor does it decolourise bromine water or Baeyer's reagent. On drastic oxidation with chromic acid, it gives a carboxylic acid (B) having molecular formulae C_7H_6O_2 . Identify the compound (A) and (B) and explain the reactions involved .

A carbonyl compound gives a positive iodoform test but does not refuce tollen's reagent or Fehling's solution. If forms a cyanohydrin with HCN, which on hydrolysis gives a hydroxy acld with a methyl side chain. Compound is :
