Amongest `H_(2)O,H_(2)S,H_(2)Se` and `H_(2)` Te the one with highest boiling point is :

A

`H_(2)O` because pf H-bonding .

B

`H_(2)` Te because of higher molecular weight.

C

`H_(2)S` because of H-bonding.

D

`H_(2)Se` because of lower molecular weight.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

Intermolecular forces between `H_(2)S,H_(2)Se` and `H_(2)` Te molecules are purely Van der Waal's force of attraction while in water there is stronger H-bonding between the water moleules. H-bond is stronger than Van der Waal's force of attraction and thus more energy is required for converting `H_(2)O(l)` to `(H_(2)O)(g)`.
