How will you account for the following ?
`Bi_(2)O_(3)` is not acidic in any of its reactions ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The size of `Bi^(3+)` ion is very large and htus gas a very weak +ve field around it. Therefore,it does not interact with `H_(2)O` to release `H^(+)` ions.
`Bi^(3+)+3H_(2)O` to `Bi(OH)_(3)+3H^(+)`
In contrast, the `O^(2-)` ion is small and has strong -ve electric field aroun it. It, therefore, interacts with water releasing `OH^(-)` ions.
Thus, `Bi_(2)o_(2)` acts as a base. In other words, `Bi_(2)o_(2)` is not acidic in any of its reactions.
