`Bi(V)` and `Sb(V)` which may be a stronger oxidizing agent and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Bismuth and antimony both belong to the nitriogen family and exhibit the `+5` oxidation state. However, on moving down the group, i.e. from antimony to bismuth, the stability, the stability of the `+5` oxidation state decreases. This is due to inert pair effect. thus, Bi (V) is a stronger oxidant than Sb (V).
