Are the oxidation state and covalency of...

Are the oxidation state and covalency of Al in `[AlCl(H_(2)O)_(5)]^(2+)` same ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The oxidation state of `C1 ` is -1 . Let us suppose that oxidation state of a1 is x
`:. X - 1 + 6 xx 0 = + 2 " or x= + 3`
Thus the oxidation state of Al is +3
Since six ligands (which can donate a pair of electrons ) I.e., `H_(2)O` molecules are attached to the aluminium atom, Therefore its covalency is 6.
