How would you react to the statement that the electronegativity of `N` on Pauling scale is `3.0` in all the nitrogen compounds?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The electronegativity of any given atom is not constant . Therefore the statement that the electronegativity of N on Pauling scale is 3.0 in all nitrogen compounds is worng. Actually electronegativity varies with the state of hybridization and the oxidation state of the element . The electronegativity increases as the percentage of s- character of a hybrid orbital increases or the oxidation state of the element increases . For example the electronegative of N increases as we move from `sp^(3) -sp^(2)-sp-` hybrid orbital . Similarly, the electronegativity of N in `NO_(2)` where oxidation state of N is + 4 is higher than that in NO where the oxidation state of N is + 2
