Two parallel plates which are sparated b...

Two parallel plates which are sparated by a very small distance `d`, are dipped in water. To how much height will the water raise between the plates (Assume contact angle `theta rarr 0`)

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Lets draw free body diagram of the water raised up. Forces on it are :
`(i)` The plates pull the surface in upward direction with a force `2Tl`
`(ii)` The weight of raiseed water `= (rho)(lhd)g` For equilibrium, force shoul be balanced.

`2Tl = (rho)(lhd)g rArr h = (2T)/(rhogd)`
Also `(T)/(d//2) = rhogh`, so we can say that pressure excess due to cylindrical surface `= (T)/(d//2) = (T)/(r_(c))`
pressure excess due to spherical surface `= (2T)/(f_(c))`
pressure excess due to cylindrical surface `= (T)/(r_(c))`
Alternative method :

`rArr P_(0) - (2T)/(d) + rhogh = P_(0) rArr h = (2T)/(rhogd)`
