An object of size 5cm is placed on the principal axis of a convex mirror at a distance of 10cm from it . The focal length of the convex mirror is 20cm. Determine the nature, position and size of the image formed.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

u=-10cm , f=+20cm [`therefore` focal length of convex mirror is positive]
Mirror equation,
`(1)/(v)+(1)/(u)=(1)/(f)`
`or, " " (1)/(v)=(1)/(f)-(1)/(u)=(1)/(20)+(1)/(10)=(1+2)/(20)=(3)/(20)`
`or, " " v=(20)/(3)=6.67cm`
From the positive sign, it can be inferred that the image is formed 6.67cm behind the mirror. So the image is virtual.
Magnification, `m=-(v)/(u)=-(20//3)/(-10)=3.33cm.`
As magnification is positive, so the image is erect.
`therefore` The size of the image `=(2)/(3)xx5=(10)/(3)=3.33cm.`
