The diameter of the moon is 3450 km and its distance from the earth is `3.8xx10^(5)km.` What will be the diameter of the image of the moon formed by a convex mirror of focal length 7.6 m ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As the moon is very far away from the earth therefore the image of the moon will be formed in the plane of the mirror.
`"Hence", v=f=7.6m`
Now, `u=3.8 xx 10^(5)` km and magnification, `m=(v)/(u)`
[taking the mod value of m]
`therefore` The diameter of the image
`=m xx "diameter of the moon"`
`(7.6 m)/(3.8 xx 10^(5)) xx 3450 km = 0.069m = 6.9 cm.`
