When a small circular obstacle is placed in front of a white wall in the path of light rays coming from a distant source, a bright spot is observed at the centre of the shadow. Explain.

Diffraction of light waves takes place at the edges of the circular obstacle. Constructive interference of these diffracted rays give rise to the bright spot at the centre of the shadow on the wall.
