What is the relation of de Broglie wavelength of a moving particle with temperature?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

If the thermal energy is not a source of kinetic energy of a moving particle, then the de Broglie wavelength of that particle is independent of the temperature. Hence the de Broglie wavelengths of emitted particles in photoelectric effect, radioactive radiation etc. have no relation with temperature.
When a particle is moving due to thermal excitation, the relation between velocity of the particle and the absolute temperaute T is given by `v prop sqrtT`.
Therefore, the de Broglie wavelength,
`lamda = (h)/(mv) or, lamda prop (1)/(sqrtT)`
